Getting Cinematic Footage: Gimbal Techniques That Actually Work

A gimbal removes shake; it does not create good movement. Footage that still looks amateur after buying one is usually the result of three things: walking normally, wrong shutter speed, and moving the camera without a reason. All three are fixable without spending anything.

Walk differently

A gimbal cancels rotation, not vertical bounce. Walk normally and every footstep travels up the pole into the frame.

The fix is the ninja walk: knees slightly bent, weight rolling heel to toe, feet placed rather than dropped. It looks ridiculous and works immediately. Keep your arms slightly bent as a secondary suspension rather than locked straight.

Fix your shutter speed

Set shutter to roughly double your frame rate — 1/50s at 25fps, 1/60s at 30fps. This produces natural motion blur, and it is the single biggest difference between footage that reads as "video" and footage that reads as "film".

In Egyptian daylight this requires an ND filter, because the correct shutter overexposes without one. That is why ND filters are considered essential rather than optional for video.

Move for a reason

Constant drifting movement is the most common beginner habit and the most tiring to watch. Every move should reveal something — a subject entering frame, a space opening up, a detail becoming visible.

Start still, move, end still. Holding a second or two at each end gives you clean edit points, and shots that begin and end static cut together far more easily.

Four movements worth learning first

  • Reveal — start behind an object, move to expose the subject.
  • Orbit — circle a subject at constant distance; strong for products and people.
  • Push in — move slowly toward the subject. Do it with your feet, not a zoom.
  • Follow — track behind or beside a moving subject at their pace.

These four cover most of what a gimbal is for. Learn them properly before adding anything more elaborate.

Slower than feels right

Camera movement almost always looks faster on screen than it felt while shooting. If a move feels slightly too slow as you perform it, it is probably about right.

Shooting at a higher frame rate and slowing the clip in editing gives another layer of smoothness, at the cost of light.

Balance and battery

None of this works on an unbalanced gimbal. If the motors are fighting the camera, they generate micro-corrections that show up as jitter regardless of technique. Balance before every shoot and after every lens change.
