Choose a gimbal by total payload — camera body, lens, and every accessory attached — not by the camera model alone. The single most common mistake is sizing to the body and forgetting that a heavy zoom lens can weigh more than the camera it is mounted on.
Payload is the whole decision
A gimbal's motors must move and hold your camera against gravity and your own movement. Exceed the rated payload and the motors saturate: the footage wobbles, the gimbal beeps or shuts down, and the motors run hot.
Add up honestly:
- Camera body
- Lens — often the heaviest single item
- Battery and memory card
- Anything else attached: microphone, cage, filter, follow-focus motor
Then leave headroom. Running near the limit means the gimbal works hard even in normal use, and you cannot add anything later without buying again.
Balancing: the step people skip
A gimbal must be mechanically balanced before its motors are switched on. Balanced correctly, the camera stays wherever you place it with the power off, in all three axes.
This matters because an unbalanced rig makes the motors compensate continuously — which drains the battery quickly, generates heat, and produces exactly the micro-jitter you bought the gimbal to eliminate.
Balancing takes a few minutes and must be redone whenever you change lens. It is not optional, and skipping it is why some people conclude a perfectly good gimbal is faulty.
Choosing a model
